Biography

Native North Las Vegan, Shari L. Buck is the first female mayor elected to the post. She has served as the City Councilwoman representing Ward 4 since July 1999.

During her tenure on the City Council, she has been instrumental in guiding the progress of North Las Vegas during a decade of unprecedented growth. The U.S. Census Bureau ranked North Las Vegas among the top five fastest-growing large cities in the country each year from 2000 to 2008. The City was ranked No. 1 in 2007.

During her inaugural term as mayor, Buck and the City Council will oversee the expansion of North 5th Street, which is the largest road improvement project in the City’s history and will convert the street into a major arterial roadway.

Buck is a key figure in guiding the development of the new City Hall and Civic Plaza. The new City Hall will be a 9-story building that consolidates City services and provides open space for community events. The new City Hall, near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard North and McDaniel Street, is expected to open for business by October 2011.

Through her efforts as a member of the City Council, the City has expanded park space, police protection and fire services to keep pace with the growth in population.

When Buck first took office as a council member, the City’s parks included about 160 developed acres. The City now has more than 600 acres, including 135 at Craig Ranch Regional Park, a premier park that will offer unparalleled recreation options and amenities.

The Police Department in 1999 had 169 peace officers. The City’s police force now has 316 peace officers in its ranks and has adopted a community policing strategy that Buck has supported as an effective method of lowering crime.

Since 2001, the City has added five new fire stations and an administration building that also doubles as an Emergency Operations Center.

Buck has been actively involved in the community and now serves on a number of local government boards and committees. She is vice-chairwoman of the North Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency. She serves as chairwoman of the Southern Nevada Water Authority Board and is a former member of the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition. She also is a member of the Deferred Compensation Advisory Committee and an alternate member of the Clark County Regional Flood Control District Citizens Advisory Committee. She is a Silver Level participant in the National League of Cities. Buck also is a member of the Board of Directors for Goodwill of Southern Nevada.

She is a former member of the North Las Vegas Library District Board of Trustees and a former member of the Colorado River Commission.

Buck graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor of arts degree in English. She also completed the Harvard University Program for Senior Executives at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Prior to being elected to the City Council, Buck worked as a substitute teacher in the Clark County School District. Buck is married to Keith and has four children.
