Employee Benefits Summary                                         

 

 The employees of the City of North Las Vegas are among its most valuable resources and the health and welfare of those employees is extremely important.  And because no two employees have the same needs, a variety of solutions are offered so that employees can choose the options that best fit them and their families.  Outlined in this brochure are some of the ways the City demonstrates its commitment to providing its employees with opportunities to improve or maintain their health and well-being.  This summary highlights general information about the benefit plans available.

 

Work Week – The City of North Las Vegas offers a four day work week, with the schedule depending on department.

 

Health Plan – Medical, dental and vision coverage is provided for employees and their dependents at no cost to the employee.

 

Retirement Plan –City of North Las Vegas employees are eligible for participation in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).  The City pays the employee’s share of the contribution, and contributes 21.5% of the worker’s eligible wages to PERS.  The contribution rate is 37% for Police Officers and Firefighters.  Employees may begin collecting a retirement benefit with five years of service at age 65, with 10 years of service at age 60, or at any age with 30 years of service.  Retirement benefits are calculated by multiplying 2.67% X annual salary X number of years of credited service.  The City pays 100% of the employee’s PERS retirement contribution.  City employees do not have deductions for Social Security taxes.

 

Deferred Compensation – In addition to PERS, a voluntary retirement savings plan option, a “457 Plan”, is offered with eligibility the first payroll of the month following employment.  Employees are eligible to contribute on a pre-tax basis up to the annual IRS maximum.  Employees over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions to their 457 Plan.  Workers are 100% vested in their contributions to the 457 Plan.  A wide array of investment options is available.  Those with an existing deferred compensation plan, such as a 457 plan, a 401(k), 403(b) or 401(a) from a prior employer, may transfer the account balance into the City’s plan at any time.

 

Life Insurance – Term life insurance is provided at no cost to the employee.  In addition, the City provides a nominal life insurance policy for your eligible dependents (those covered by the health plan).  Additional life insurance is available through a supplemental plan via payroll deduction.

 

Holidays – The City offers 12 paid holidays per year, plus an additional floating holiday to be used anytime during the year.

 

Vacation/Annual Leave – Employees will accrue 3 weeks of annual leave per year during the first 5 years of employment.  Annual leave accrual increases are based on the prevailing ordinance or collective bargaining agreement provisions.

 

Sick Leave – Upon completion of two consecutive months of service, employees are granted two days of sick leave.  Thereafter, employees accrue sick leave at a rate equal to one day per month.  There is no limit to the number of hours which may be accrued.

 

Emergency Leave – During the first year of service, workers accrue 3 days of emergency leave.  Thereafter, one day of emergency leave accrues per year of service, up to a maximum of 15 days of emergency leave.

 

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) – Employees and their household are eligible for free counseling sessions.  These confidential counseling sessions can help with stress, depression, substance abuse, parenting and family conflicts, workplace problems, financial and legal advice, to name just a few of the variety of services provided through the EAP.

 

Credit Union Membership –City of North Las Vegas employees are eligible to join Clark County Credit Union.  The credit union provides better rates on savings accounts and lower fees on loans compared with banks.  The Credit Union offers a “skip-a-payment” loan program, an auto brokerage service, and a full real estate department to assist you.  Annually the Credit Union rebates a share of its earnings back to members--more than thirty million dollars in the last five years.

This Benefit Summary highlights the main features of the benefit plans offered by the City of North Las Vegas.  This summary does not include all plan details or rules, including limitations and exclusions.  The terms of the benefit plans are governed by legal documents including insurance contracts.  Should there be any inconsistencies between this brochure and the legal plan documents, the plan documents are the final authority.  The City reserves the right to alter, reduce or eliminate any policy or benefit, except those provisions or benefits required by law or bargaining agreements.
