Baby Time presented by Olive Crest Family Resource Center

Wednesdays @ 10:30 am (***does not meet the second Wednesday of each month***)

Baby Time is a special activity time just for babies! Enjoy an hour with early childhood specialist, Renee, who will guide you and your baby through the latest techniques in early learning. Brain research shows that your baby is born ready to learn and that exposure to rhyme, music, and baby games help build the foundations necessary for school readiness and school success. Join other parents and babies for a playful, enthusiastic hour of early learning fun! No registration required. (No Baby Time during the month of August. Program resumes on September 15)

Artful Play presented by Olive Crest Family Resource Center

Wednesdays @ 10:30 am (***does not meet the second Wednesday of each month***)

“Learning is child’s play” and Artful Play is a fun way for you and your toddler to spend time together and to enjoy the company of other parents, care givers, and energetic toddlers. Early childhood specialist, Renee, will be on hand to share information on a variety of current topics and will provide the day's activities for you and your child to enjoy. This is a great way to enjoy the companionship and support of other parents and care givers, to pick up new "tips and tricks" from the experts and other parents, share frustrations and solutions, celebrate successes, and provide positive, social experiences for your toddler. Bring a snack if you like and be prepared for a fun-filled hour of lively activity! No registration required. (No Artful Play during the month of August. Program resumes on September 15)

Programs for Elementary School Age Children

Creative Arts for Kids

The creative arts programs are normally scheduled for Wednesday afternoons from 4:30 to 5:30 and usually run 6 to 8 weeks in length. There is a public performance at the conclusion of each program session. Participation in the arts helps students develop critical thinking skills, creative problem solving, effective communication, teamwork, and more. Creative art programs also

allow children to express themselves and can improve and strengthen their self esteem. Space is limited in these programs and registration is required.

Registration Dates:

Holiday Pipe Orchestra–September 1 (starts September 22)

Summer Reading Club

June 5th-July 31 (registration begins June 5th)

Summer Reading Club is a fun way to keep children reading during the summer. This program is open to all children, ages birth through high school. Independent readers and teens earn prizes for reading their favorite books. Children too young to read on their own may earn prizes by having someone read to them. Special programs are offered throughout the summer, and a schedule of events may be found on the library’s on-line calendar beginning in May.

FAQs about Story Time

Do I need to register for story time and other programs? Seating is limited for some programs and registration may be either recommended or required depending on the program. Open registration generally begins three weeks prior to the start of program sessions.

How do I register? To register for weekly story times and programs, please contact the children's desk at the Aliante Library by telephone at 839-2980 or visit anytime during regular library hours.

Which story time is the best for my child? Our story time programs are designed with the developmental needs of your child as the central consideration for program content. Please use the age guidelines provided in each program description to decide which one is the best fit for your child. Although younger and older siblings are welcome, you will find that the program content focuses on the developmental needs for the ages indicated for each of the listed programs. For example, story times for babies will focus on the developmental needs of babies, and school readiness programs will address the developmental needs of older children who are acquiring early literacy skills critical for school success. Content for story time programs is based on current research in brain development, best practices in early childhood education, and Nevada's pre-K standards.

May I switch to a different program or to a different session? The answer to both questions is "yes". Your child's maturity level and developmental age will help guide your choice of programs. Your child's experience in a particular program will be the best benchmark for choosing the right program. If you need to make a change, please contact the children's desk for space availability.

What if I'm late to story time? Come in! It's never too late to join the fun.

May I bring siblings? Yes, siblings are always welcome. However, we ask that parents keep sibling distractions to a minimum. You may come and go during the story time session as needed to help maintain an enjoyable and positive story time experience for everyone.

This is my first experience with story time, what should I expect? Anything can happen and usually does. It may take a period of adjustment for a child who is new to the story time experience. This is normal. The length of time it takes a child to become comfortable in story time depends on many factors. Just be patient...it will happen. Some helpful tips: Relax! we've all been first time parents; make story time a regular part of their daily routine that fits into meal and nap time schedules; "come and go" as needed during story time to help calm and reassure a child about the new experience; extend the story time experience at home with books and related activities; don't worry about a "perfect" outcome for any craft or story time activity; join in the activities--children love seeing their parents involved in the story time experience; take the opportunity to network with other parents--staying after for a short time if possible enables children to interact with other children; take some time to browse for books; and meet Princess Scales. Most importantly - make learning fun.
